SATURDAY JUNE 2 10AM-6PM This free workshop presents a fast an easy way to use data received from an analog sensor in the Processing and Arduino environments. Participants will learn to utilize the Arduino and prototype electronic boards to read meaningful data from the environment. The sensors can be affected by the light, the orientation, or a user’s physical input. For this matter we will use photocell, accelerometer,  potentiometer and others.

Bring your own arduino boards and laptops to test different sensors or outputs. I have a couple of accelerometers, LEDs, photocells and potenciometers among other electronic components… but feel free to bring your own. Soldering irons are welcome too.

Come to foamcity and join the Lafayettech community in the Arduino Hack Day. This event is within the frame of the show “Experiencia Mística” an interactive art installation that is also on display from May 31 to June 3.

Spending more time outdoors inspired local musician and artist Chris Toliver to create “Deep Woods,” a performance art piece featuring original electronic music, theater, dance and projected art.
“Deep Woods” will run at 9 p.m. Friday and will be the first attempt at performance art at Foam City, a new arts venue that offers studio space for local artists and musicians.
For years, Toliver has crafted ambient, beat-driven music, but “Deep Woods” gives his sound a visual element. The artist recruited four dancers from Purdue University’s Dance Division. Alyssa Beatty, Allyson Mercer, Andrea Larsen and Emma Mock are adept at improvisation and choreography.
Used to the high-tech staging and studios at Purdue, Mock and company are dancing in a small warehouse setting on old carpet. It’s raw, but the dancers are inspired.
“It’s so different,” Mock said. “We’re like some of the pioneers.”
The dancers, and Toliver, don costumes designed by the artist. The set featuring large trees was constructed by Toliver and Mike Booth.
About an hour long, “Deep Woods” also features the talents of fellow electronic musician Aaron Zernack and DJ Ghost. Zernack and Purdue artist Esteban Garcia will provide digital art to go along with the music.
The ambitious project could put Foam City on the map for other performance-based art.
“I hope it inspires people to do more with their shows,” Toliver said.

A Celebration w/ THE YOLKS, HEAD ON ELECTRIC, ERIC AND THE HAPPY THOUGHTS, & THEE DREAM POACHERS https://foamcity.org/2012/04/25/283/ https://foamcity.org/2012/04/25/283/#comments Thu, 26 Apr 2012 01:07:52 +0000 snebtor https://foamcity.org/?p=283

YOLKS
There was a time when you were a kid and you thought you knew what trouble was: constantly seeking something to tell you different. As you grew older you began to find the right feedback and cower.
There are two instances in my history of Lafayette which stick in my head much the same as the excruciating headache I had the morning after both of these events…
You may know a girl titled Awkward Erin. She once had a nice family with a nice home, until all of Lafayette showed up one night to party naked until the Sun came up. But before the Sun could find itself at the party; all of Erin’s Father’s Scotch was consumed, a sliding glass door was cracked by a well known ASS, a crew of shithead misogynists were chased out of the party by a man with a KNIFE, and I lost my virginity to Lady Gange. By the time the Sun showed up, the Assumed Regulator of Lafayette had taken the Father’s chariot for a cruise.

This is my First fond memory,

now for my Second…

There was a time when there was a certain apartment above a certain skateshop on the Eastside of town. That’s where I began my learnin’. Weekends in between terrible doldrums of weeks I spent here; pouring down my throat drinks/making my dick stink. The weekends began to become the doldrums, also. Summer came and there was no more school…free at last…continued my terrible streak of monotony until a mystery Saviour was declared to be approaching. An interesting night already; with Travelers and Friends and Strangers united under one foul roof, my ears were delighted with Local sounds and Local whispers. The Yolks arrived and blew the goddamned filthy entrapment right from above our heads. And I was caught dancin’ with a female I shouldn’t have been with.

Can’t wait for the Return of The Yolks….

HEAD ON ELECTRIC
So, 20 years ago there was some troop of musical DORKS that may have turned some heads. Some call them a necessary link in the History of Rock n Roll, blah blah blah. I never had an affinity to said sound, but I’ve been guilt tripped by a mass of Heads, with years on me, informing me….

”Get yer head outta yer ass, kid. Dig these sounds.”

I may have replied defensively…

“Whatever ya old man, I’m on that new trip.”

I’ve always been one to respect my elders, and question the validity of my own enlightenment in the process. But I could never wrap my head around this band. Soon, there were several instances nagging me, especially with local talent like SILENT HIPPIE and ANCIENT SLANG and even TV GHOST sneaking riffs as allusion on me.

Head on Electric will be the band to break me and I can’t help but notice.

ERIC AND THE HAPPY THOUGHTS
I have a few statements…

Let’s go fishin’. But I don’t want no trout. It’s easy to go fishin’ when all the Indiana Girls come out to see Eric and the Happy Thoughts. Bliss is all I can get out of ‘em. They’ve saved me from suicide several times. I had to step back from the edge: It’s hard to find yourself at that point with the gun in yer hand when you’ve been trapped somewhere in between Jordan Allen’s relentless SPAGHETTI legs. It seems he’ll continue to dance down the street and take the bass with him. Thank God, Eric remains so passive, or he may become jealous of the audience taking his role of front man right from under him. Trent is the Rock, our Father and Foundation, the man who keeps things rolling. He’s also my role model.

But I can’t help but a-keep-a-thinkin’ to myself…..

Spaghetti Legs. I’m Lost in your Spaghetti Legs, Jordan Allen.

DREAM POACHERS
Big Brothers. Little Brothers……..dreams. Smashed…..poached maybe.
Shoulda gotten on with what you wanted to get on with before that little shit was borne.

While cleaning up around Foam City this weekend, we uncovered a small creature behind some metal. After introductions, the creature proceeded to engage us in a tradition throat gargle chant. Sadly, it was cut short due to a spell of tuberculosis that has taken over its colony.
